My practice is continuous exploration and experimentation around the intersection of botanical symbolism, historical memory, and the ritualized navigation of grief. I investigate the multi-layered role of floral, as vessels of cultural memory and as metaphors for mourning, engaging with the complexities of visual iconographies referenced from Korean literature and its literary techniques of poetic representation. I am interested in the social phenomenon of metaphorical imagery, where these iconographies circulate as decorative, symbolic lexicons used in daily rituals and ceremonies across various contexts, including offerings, as a means of comfort or grieving.
Within this framework, flowers function as internal mediators between the material and immaterial and as an intersection of the postcolonial, the individual, and the collective history. The transition occurs in the act of mark-making and the gestural texture created by the painting/drawing medium. Painting is an intuitive action of longing for relief, within as a form of ritualistic act in its conceptual grounding and material execution. I convert mark-making into a ritualized exploration of grief, sorrow, and the resonance of cultural memory by engaging flora as both symbolic vessels and ritualized objects, drawing on their presence in Korean shamanic/contemporary ceremonies, funerary traditions, and ancient tombs where petals accompanied the dead.
By merging painting and drawing mediums, I dissolve the formal boundaries of representation and abstraction to hold the intimacy of personal grief alongside the persistence of memory; in this way, the act of making becomes a form of remembrance.
